1) "Neither man had bothered to learn much of the enemy's language. Both knew a few and derogatory phrases,a few crude words of command or interrogation, but not much more."(Vea, 79)
2) This qoute means that even though they are fighting against each other they didnt bother to learn each others language to communicate. They were just told to fight the enemy and thats what they did. the importance of this is that when some Americans and some Vietnamese talked you can see the hate they had for each other even though they didnt know each other, an example is the type of language they learned. They were never able to find the full truth because they had too many obstacles to get it, for example the language.
3) Why didnt the Vietnamese or the americans learn to speak each others language?
Why did they both learn french instead of any other language?

Stephanie V. second week response
1) "There are seventy five wars going on in this world right now, and only one of them mat ches the homicide rate in this country,..but i will do something that he and his kind could never do.I will stand up for him in a court of law, and i will do my best"(Vea,63)
2) This is significant because it shows how Jesse doesnt care about what Bernard says about being in an Aryan Nation or about any of his other racial judgements, he only cares about proving this case and trying to "fight" to prove the truth. This is meaningful because this case is looked at by jesse as a war. He talks about the as if he was trying to connect both things and say that unlike his country, the u.s, he is going to stand up for him in the court of law.
Questions
1) Does Jesse care about what race Bernard is ?
2) What do u think the doctor meant when he told Jesse that "Life is not a war"?
